A Moment in Time: February 21, 2013. Ayahuasca has healed me

What if every step that we take in our life is leading us toward a necessary event that can only come once we are prepared and ready for it?

Recently, I was blessed with the opportunity of doing a sacred journey to the Peruvian jungle. Now that I have accomplished it and I am benefiting from its results, it is making me understand the dynamics of life when we ask for a major breakthrough and after a while we are able to experience it.

My encounter with the sacred plants of the Amazon is something that I started to prepare for when I was eighteen years old and had began studying Anthropology first in US and then in Colombia, the country that saw me coming into this world. I was an immature youngster when I first started learning about shamanic wisdom and the power of the plants shamans used in terms of consciousness and their role in the healing of the human brain and heart. Looking back in time, I can’t believe it took me more than twenty years to feel myself ready enough to receive in my body the effects and transformation that only these sacred plants could offer me.

The reason why I have decided to publish this article is because I consider it of major importance that we start acknowledging the fact that not all which Western society has labeled as an “illegal drug” is truly such. Now that I have experienced the blessings of ayahuasca I can finally confirm that this is by no means a “recreational drug.” On the contrary, it is a powerful tool that the indigenous tribes of the Amazon basin and their descendants (existing similar plants with similar effects in many other places throughout the world) use exclusively for healing purposes and not for “having fun” as our definition of “recreational” commonly implies.

Perhaps this is why I didn’t take Yagé or Ayahuasca (its name varies depending on the region) when I was eighteen. Deep inside I simply knew this was something for committed individuals and not for amateurs.

When you treat these plants as a medicine that can transform positively your life, this is precisely what happens: you are healed in such magical way! In my case, it wasn’t my physical body that needed to heal but my emotional and spiritual bodies which still had some energy blocks and remains of my “old self” who didn’t want to leave just yet.

Taking time for healing even when you don’t seem to be ill is a practice we westerners have forgotten and must start remembering. Globally speaking we are an advanced society that has achieved such vast development in terms of science and technology. Still, when referring to our health we are still choosing to practice a curative medicine at the same time that keep ignoring the use of a preventive one. This is the reason why our hospitals look more like fully booked hotels with sick people who sometimes can’t even be fully diagnosed so that they are able to comprehend what is truly going on inside of them.

Modern medicine is designed for people who already have a disease, but what about a medicine that could prevent us from getting to the stage of illness in the first place?

This is a short article so I won’t get into the details of my healing with ayahuasca, but basically, once I had drank it and experienced all the purging that came with it, it took me a few days to accept that inside of me there could be so much space for so much trash! We humans have this habit of collecting and keeping what is no longer of service. And believe me when I say that I’m the one in my family with the reputation of loving when it’s time for a general cleaning of the house! Still so, it is so easy to keep old pain, resentment, guilt, shame and all those emotions that, later on when it is too late, can become a physical serious sickness translated into a life threatening condition.

I can say that from here on this will be one of my new (even though it is so ancient) ways of curing my Self. I’m sure my body will know when it’s time for another visit to my friends the shamans and “curanderos” and even though the preparation, diet and purging that comes along with ayahuasca are somewhat uncomfortable and unpleasant, seeing the healed Self emerging from one’s own core is so worthwhile.

It is time to bring back to our modern minds the dateless knowledge that still lives deep in the heart of the most primitive areas of the planet. There is too much addiction, too much depression and disease for us not to take responsibility and start sharing with the world that yes, there is hope and yes, there is a cure if and only if, we are willing to change the imposed thought patterns and belief systems that we are currently applying to our lives.

Last but not least, it is critical to acknowledge and accept the difference between an illegal drug which purpose is to recreate our most destructive addictions and a non-addictive sacred plant which only exists and is offered to us by nature as a means of healing our individual and collective mind created demons once and for all.

Until next time and don’t forget to be love!
